Celebrating Spring

A5 Trav.e.logue watercolor sketchbook, fountain pen and watercolor.

This morning we went out for breakfast. The restaurant was full so we got our turn number and sat in the lobby with other people, when a woman came into the restaurant dressed appropriately for today. Why? Because finally Mother Nature favored us with this gorgeous day of Spring after many near freezing cold days. Not only leaves on trees are showing up, people too. The attire of this woman was screaming Spring happiness. The floral pattern of her tight dress matched her hair band with also green fabric flowers that she was wearing as a crown, the flowers were literally on her forehead, like in one of those ladies from Robin Hood movies. She sat down next to our table, it was a perfect view to sketch her. I like the fact that despite her jazzy look, she doesn't give a damn about what others, like me, think or say. Way to go girl!

New gas station.

A5 Trav.e.logue Watercolor Sketchbook, pen, ink and watercolor.
There's a new gas station in town. Although a lot of people didn't want it here, there was a survey among the people in the area to know whether or not they wanted it. They swore the gas station would look nice and neat according to the town and neighborhood's standards and style. I heard the people who wanted it won 7 votes to 1. Now that it is here turned out to be convenient for a lot of people. When we left to Mexico last November they were digging the grounds and saw gasoline tanks on the ground. Now that we are back it fascinates me how fast they build things here. The car wash's building is there but is not open to the public yet. I went to check it out this evening, sat inside the store and sketched from the big, clear and new window.

An excuse to not to eat

A5 Trav.e.logue Watercolor Sketchbook, pen, ink and watercolor.

I've been wanting to try a new set up to sketch with the new tools that I bought. I normally use Pentel waterbrushes on the go. I got a set of travel watercolor brushes that I couldn't wait to try and I finally did yesterday. This time my excitement to use these new toys was greater than my desire to eat my meal warm. I absolutely loved them. A traditional American breakfast was in front of me and chose it as my subject.  The waitress came to the table to check on my sketch but she seemed to be more concerned about my meal getting cold, and she expressed it to me. I told her that was one the downsides of sketching your meal, but I never told her I don't do it often.  It is after all that I need a really big excuse to keep me away from my food. Well here it is, enjoy.

Tasting ice cream.

A5 Trav.e.logue Watercolor Sketchbook, pen, ink and watercolor.
This is one of those evenings when I just wanted to sit and have a cup of coffee and a piece of pastry. This couple arrived and gave to their baby a taste of ice cream. I sketched their heads first. I thought they were going to stay standing there a little longer to order something but didn't and moved instants later. I had to figure out the rest of their bodies, fortunately they sat in the same area and could sketch some details of their cloths. The rest of the shop was easy to sketch, specially with coffee at hand.

The 5 month surprise.

20 x 14 cm AMI Watercolor Sketchbook, pen, ink and watercolor.

Here I come, little miss perfection, thinking that returning home after months away, everything will be ready to use, and that includes the refrigerator. We, better said, I like to leave our refrigerator working when we are away. After many failed attempts, leaving the fridge unplugged has met us with ugly surprises, from bad odor (stinky really), fans that don't work, to having to buy a new unit. So given said that, we left our fridge working. I usually put seeds, nuts, cans of soda or food in tetra-packs to keep the fridge running. Well, this time I left by accident an onion saver with half onion inside for 5 months! I took it out of the fridge and it felt heavy. -Oh my, don't shake it- I thought - all the spores from mold will spread everywhere-. I opened the saver and a beautiful sprout sprang out the container. It was a sprout with yellow branches shaped in a spiral form. So cute and no mold! The leaves or branches or I don't know how it is called became green in a matter of hours! Then I thought, don't bulbs need water to sprout? I think the bulb dehydrated but the container kept the released water enclosed. The wonders of an onion. So I sketched it, honor to whom honors is due, and by that I mean to Mother Nature.
