Upper Bluff Historic District

Pen&ink and watercolor on HP watercolor paper 11 in x 7 in
A beautiful neighborhood close to downtown Joliet, the Upper Bluff Historic District, has a lot of  architectural styles. It’s located in the West side of the Des Plain River. This District is well preserved and it’s known for keeping the integrity of the architectural styles built between 1850 and 1930. This house,  near the University of San Francis looks like a Dutch Colonial. The roof shape makes this house so charming and cute, I couldn’t help myself to sketch it. Old and well preserved is something many of us appreciate and enjoy.

St John the Baptist Catholic Church

Pen&ink and watercolor on Hot Press Watercolor paper 11 in x 7 in
I stopped to sketch this church in downtown Joliet. Three people were hanging ornaments on top of the main door. The overcast sky this morning didn’t help to define the shade. I squinted my eyes with no solution. I was sited in the car in the shaded side, so that helped. It would be easier to figure out where North was if I knew where I was, ha! The promise of rain this afternoon is finally here, it’s raining now, almost night. Nice! Trees will be happy.

Garbage truck

Pen&ink and watercolor on Pentalic Watercolor Sketchbook 10 in x 7 in
Despite the size of this garbage truck, I successfully fitted it in the frame on my camera at the stop street light, hurrying to snap a photo of the back before the street light changed to green. It looks so worn out but so beautiful. That yellow paint peeling off and the rust drawing down oxide lines that get more attention than the “Caution” sign itself. Handsome truck, probably with many years of service to grateful residents.

Sketches of China talk.

The talk we had last Saturday for Chinese audience was fun. While we talked about my sketching experience and answered their questions, I shared sketches of my beloved Mexico and at the end they shared their the beautiful sketches, it was a pleasant surprise. Thanks to Jenny Zhang @jennymouse2003 for her invitation. Her project to introduce international sketchers to China is doing great and I'm glad I participated.

If you want to see a brief of the talk click here to go to Jenny's blog. The site is in Chinese but Google translate offers you the automatic choice to translate it to your language.
