Rainbow row, my farewell to Charleston, SC.

Pen&ink and watercolor on HP watercolor Sketchbook, 10 in x 7 in

This is my farewell to Charleston, even though I’m back at home, settled and sorting out mail, it’s a sketch I never did there. I really wanted to draw this row of houses as illustrated  above. I took a photo of every single house for reference. So many windows! Some don’t have a door, is it because it is on the other side of the house? Ha! The pastel colors of houses, although I have none in my palette, we’re made using transparent watercolors and Buff Titanium from Daniel Smith, something I saw online I wanted to try. I guess it worked out well.

The fame of this houses were questioned by one driver of one the carriages pulled by horses that takes you on tour around downtown Charleston. The driver said that the houses have really no historic significance other that being old and being renovated and painted in pastel colors. It was until the Time magazine mentioned the rainbow row of houses in an article and the name stuck.

Anyway, here’s my take of the famous site. Thanks Charleston, now I’m going to devour the books I got about history and cultural contributions of this beautiful city.
